Unlock the Magic:

Ultimate Full Moon Ritual Guide

The Full Moon marks the end of the monthly moon cycle. Our inner world and emotions can be strongly impacted during a Full Moon.

What’s a Full Moon?

Astronomically, Full Moon occurs when the Sun is in opposition to the Moon, which means the Sun is straight across from the Moon with the Earth in between. Because the Moon reflects light from the Sun, this creates the visual effect of a full Moon from our view on Earth.

Spiritually, it is regarded as a blissful time to release negative energy, let go of what no longer serves you. It is also a powerful time to recommit yourself to the projects and relationships that mean the most to you.

What energy does a Full Moon carry?

The Full Moon phase lasts for about three days and time spent under the luminosity of the Full Moon has the power to be transformational, intense, and inspiring. It’s important  to be intentional about what you are focusing on during this time.

How can we channel the energy of the Full Moon?

During a Full Moon is when the moon's energy is said to be at its peak. The Full moon offers an opportunity to sit in the fullness of your life. It's a great time to reflect on what you've built during the waxing phase  (between the New Moon and Full Moon) while shedding anything that doesn't feel right.

My simple 7 step Full Moon Ritual

Each month, I practice a Full Moon ritual where I set intentions to release anything that no longer serves me. Here are my 7 simple steps that you can use too!

1) Reflect and set an intention

Begin with taking a moment to reflect on what you’re ready to release from your life. Grab your journal or a piece of paper and write down your intentions. Use specific, positive language, focusing on what you want to let go of.

2) Create a sacred space

Creating a sacred space where you feel at ease and centered is key to a powerful and memorable experience. This space can be a small corner in your home, a cozy nook, or any area where it feels serene and comfortable. Make sure whichever space you choose is free of distractions.

The next step is to personalize your sacred space with items that bring comfort and inspiration.

These can include:

  • Candles
  • Crystals
  • Incense
  • Essential oils
  • Soft music
  • A warm cup of herbal tea
  • A small bowl to burn paper

3) Ground and Center yourself

Close your eyes and feel the surface beneath you. Take a few conscious breaths to centre yourself. Notice what sensations are rising as you inhale. Soften on your exhale. Allowing yourself to slow down your breath and be with the moment.

4) Write Down What You Want to Release

After centering, take your journal or a piece of paper and write down what you want to release in your life. Be specific and just let the thoughts flow. I always advice people to start connecting with things that have been happening recently - that day, the day before, etc. Once you do this, you will notice how the ideas start to come up. And if nothing comes up, that's ok too. Allow yourself to be in silence and wait until the next possible thing comes up what you want to let go of.

5) Release What No Longer Serves You

As you write down what you wish to release, fear and limiting beliefs can come up. Resistance is a normal thing that shows up. Take a moment to let go of this negative energy that may be holding you back. Write down anything that no longer serves you and that you’re ready to let go of.

6) Burn Your Paper

Now it’s time to safely burn the paper. As you see the paper turning to ash, visualize the things you want to release leaving your life. If you’re not able to burn the paper, you may throw it in the trash. Once you’re done with this step, say a prayer or affirmation, expressing gratitude to the universe for assisting you in this process.

7) Take Inspired Action

After your ritual, take inspired action towards releasing what no longer serves you. This can be as simple as creating a plan or taking a small step to let go of what you want to release. Trust that you will be guided by the universe but remember, it’s up to you to take aligned action and make it happen.

What themes to focus on Full Moons throughout the year

Every month we have a full moon in one of the 12 zodiac signs (Aries through Pisces). A full moon carries a specific energy and theme based on the planetary arrangement in the sky at the exact moment it is fully illuminated.

While a New Moon always falls in the zodiac sign the sun is currently moving through, a Full Moon will always be in the opposite sign of which the sun is moving through. For example, a Full Moon between February 19 - March 20  will be in the sign of Virgo, as Virgo is the opposite sign of Pisces.

Aries: As Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, a Full Moon in Aries encourages you to put yourself first and to embrace your independence . It's a time for self-discovery and standing up for what you believe in. Trust your instincts and don't shy away from taking steps towards your goals.

Taurus: A Full Moon in Taurus highlight the parts of our lives where security and stability are needed and where practicality and true purpose can be called in. It reminds us to connect with Mother Earth and feel held, supported, and abundant. Trust that you have the inner resilience to face any storm.

Gemini: The Full Moon in Gemini is a time to appreciate the details of life while working on the bigger picture. Our desires and dreams require intuitive guidance as well as logic so it’s important to learn how to both micro and macro manage different areas of our life.

Cancer: The Full Moon in Cancer is the time to give yourself space to heal. Take a break in your daily life and slow down to invite your feelings to the surface. Don’t be afraid to leave your old shell behind and form a new one that can hold space for you to evolve.

Leo: A Full Moon in Leo asks you to  release your old way of showing up in the world so that you can replace it with your full authentic self. It's time for you to let your light shine and show the world who you really are.

Virgo: The Full Moon in Virgo invites us to connect to a holistic approach to self-improvement, well-being, organization, and practicality. It's a time to fine-tune aspects of your life and embrace a sense of order and mindfulness.

Libra:  A Full Moon in Libra is all about creating balance and harmony. Whatever is asking to be released is the thing that creates disharmony in your life and makes you feel off-balance.

Scorpio: The Scorpio Full Moon empowers you to delve into the depths of your emotions, embrace change, and harness your innate power for personal growth and evolution.

Sagittarius: A Full Moon in Sagittarius tells you it’s time to stop procrastinating, stop making excuses, and get on with what you truly want in life. If you arrive at a Full Moon in Sagittarius feeling like you're not where you want to be in life, then it's time to make changes.

Capricorn: The full Moon in Capricorn is a time to go within and understand your core essence. It's a time to commit to finding your life's work and shed anything that distracts you, including your emotions. Capricorn asks that you see your feelings as information.

Aquarius: Aquarius Full Moon energy encourages radical change in our own lives. It’s a time to let go of old, outdated things. It is all about staying current and not being stuck in the past.

Pisces:  The Full Moon in Pisces softens our resistance to change. It encourages you to “let go and let it flow?”  This is the time to trust yourself to take your dreams out of your head and into the world.
